May - September

2nd Wednesday

One of the best collections of Pre-1977 Classic Cars in Northern Illinois.

Since 2000, Park on Park has been a staple of Mundelein fun. The cruise night specializes in pre-1977 vehicles only. By limiting attendants to classic cars, the event draws some of the finest vehicles in the area. The quality of the vehicles consistently amazes me. We offer an organized event that has something for owners and spectators alike.

The origins of Park-on-Park Cruise Night started as “idle conversation” among members of On the Road Classics a Mundelein car club formed in June of 1999. Club members wanted to host a local car night event, but with only ten members at the time, resources were limited. The club approached Mundelein MainStreet, the non-profit downtown promotional arm of the Village, to assess the interest in partnering with the club on holding a summertime car event in downtown. The idea was simple: combine the resources of MainStreet and the Village, with the club’s knowledge of car events to bring visitors to downtown to enjoy classic cars.

Led by Tony Christie and his father Pete Christie, the initial planning meeting for what became Park-on-Park was held in February of 2000. The hope was to start the cruise nights in May of that year. Many obstacles had to be overcome in a short period, but with strong support from the Village of Mundelein Public Works Department, Park on Park Cruise Nights took shape as a co-hosted event between On the Road Classics and Mundelein Mainstreet in conjunction with the Village of Mundelein.

On the Road Classics secured business sponsors (many of whom remain sponsors), prepared a site plan, and printed flyers. The club organized a grassroots campaign to promote the new event. Members attended every cruise night, car show, and automotive gathering throughout Chicagoland to get the word out. After numerous meetings, they were confident that they could count on fifty to seventy-five cars would attend the inaugural event. To everyone’s surprise, the first night in May of 2000 attracted over 160 cars and was well attended by the public. Since that time, Park-on-Park has grown significantly. It has received rave reviews from car enthusiasts and spectators alike.
Park-on-Park Cruise Night specializes in pre-1977 vehicles only. By limiting attendants to classic cars, the event draws some of the finest vehicles in the area. It’s been a hard sell at times to turn away owners of newer production cars, but the commitment to pre-1977 cars has remained strong over the years in the Chicago area. On the Road Classics disbanded in 2020 after twenty years of dedication to this popular event.

Mundelein Community Connection then assumed organizational responsibility. With continued support from the Village and community members, Park-on-Park carries on. Tony, Pete, and other club members remain loyal supporters. Their creation remains one of Mundelein’s signature summer recreational downtown attractions.
We hope for another great year for everyone involved. Nostalgia is back in a big way, and Park on Park offers a heavy dose. Mundelein Park on Park is the second Wednesday of every month from May to September.
