December 7, 2024

WinterFest is MCC’s most recent event. WinterFest was started in December 2022 as a compliment to the annual Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony organized by the Village of Mundelein and the Mundelein Park and Recreation District. MCC had participated in the Tree Lighting ceremony for many years by opening Santa’s Cottage and providing refreshments as part of the event. Over the years, the tree lighting had become an extremely popular family-event, so it was only natural to expand and enhance it by adding games, crafts, and other kid-focused activities.
The inaugural WinterFest was 5 hours, held on the Saturday following the Tree Lighting. It featured Train Rides, Ice Sculpting, Disney Princesses, musical entertainment, story-time, letters to Santa, and “Shoot-the Puck”. Turnout was good and the feedback was encouraging. Attendance doubled in year two. The event was expanded to 4-hours. The core activities remained the same, with a few additions including an opening ceremony with a greeting from Santa, a Kris Kringle Market, more kids games, more crafts, and more food and musical acts.
For year three in December of 2024, the Tree Lighting will be moved from Friday night to Saturday night and combined into WinterFest, creating an extravaganza that begins at 1pm, culminating with the Tree Lighting, Fireworks, and Santa’s Cottage from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.
